Asda has managed to have a recent TV ad by Aldi banned from the airwaves following a series of complaints it raised with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
After a thorough investigation, the ASA has sided with Asda on the issue and prevented the advert from continuing to be broadcast.
The advert was released by money-saving supermarket Aldi and showed a mother called Tracey who claimed that shopping at Aldi instead of her usual major supermarket chain saved her £45 on groceries a week. However, Asda claimed that the advert was not a fair comparison and instead relayed misleading claims as to how much shoppers could save on their weekly food shop.
Among Asda’s main dissatisfactions was the fact that the advert compared different food products from different supermarkets, so did not demonstrate a clear or fair price comparison. The survey involved also did not include all of the comparable items bought at the stores, meaning Aldi could have had an unfair advantage.
Meanwhile, the price comparisons were made between April and May in 2013 and so may no longer be relevant to today’s shoppers.
Aldi defended itself by explaining that the commercial was only intended to show how the average family could make savings on their weekly grocery shop by shopping at Aldi, and was not claiming specific savings on a product by product basis.
Nevertheless, the ASA saw the ‘lack of specific information’ in the ad as a cause for concern, saying that it created a misleading impression of the overall benefit to viewers. The ad has therefore been banned as a result, with Aldi saying it felt ‘wholly disappointed’ by ASA’s decision.
